Biography

Jonas Tschanz takes on a broad musical repertoire and explores classical music from different stylistic periods. He is particularly interested in contemporary music and has premiered numerous works.

As a passionate chamber musician, he performs internationally in various formations. He is currently working in the BlattWerk Quintett, Trio SÆITENWIND, Melisma Saxophone Quartet (Amsterdam) and in the Konus Quartett with. His busy concert schedule has taken him all over Europe, to China, Georgia, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Russia and the USA, where he has performed at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the National Center of Performing Arts Beijing and Izumi Hall Osaka, among others.

He has performed as a soloist with various orchestras, including the Camerata Schweiz, the Biel Solothurn Symphony Orchestra and the Oberland Thun Wind Orchestra. He has also been a guest at numerous festivals such as the Davos Festival, Huddersfield Festival (UK), Lucerne Festival, Grieg Festival Bergen (N) and Musikprotokoll (AT). His performances have been recorded and broadcast by national radio stations in Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland (SRF).

 

Jonas Tschanz has been an accredited member of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich since 2016 and is a regular guest with the Bern Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Proton and Ensemble Phoenix. He has performed under the baton of renowned conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Kent Nagano and Paavo Järvi. Various CD recordings round off his musical activities. The album “figurations” with the BlattWerk Quintett (2022) impressed critics internationally and was placed on the best list by the “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik”.

He has received numerous awards for his solo and chamber music performances, including from the Marianne and Curt Dienemann Foundation, the ORPHEUS Swiss Chamber Music Competition and the Concours Nicati. He was also a scholarship holder of the Ernst Göhner Foundation and Migros Culture Percentage. In 2015, he was honored with the Cultural Promotion Prize of the City of Thun. He is also an ambassador for the instrument manufacturer Henri Selmer Paris.

Jonas Tschanz completed his instrumental studies with Christian Roellinger in Bern and with Arno Bornkamp in Amsterdam before obtaining a specialized master’s degree in contemporary music with Marcus Weiss, Jürg Henneberger and Mike Svoboda at the Basel University of Music.
